As its nineteenth release, Nice Music presents its first vinyl LP - the self titled debut from Melbourne’s Golden Syrup, aka emerging visual, sound and performance artist Sara Retallick.
‘Golden Syrup’ is a sharply erudite collection of sounds and songs, brandished in the gleam of Retallick’s starkly HD reflections of her environment and informed by her multidisciplinary studies in sound and art. The disarming directness of the songs lies in her unflinchingly bold vocal delivery; a darkly ornate musical infrastructure ominously arches around this performance. Every beat and tone a cluster of inseparable synthetic and organic elements, piled delicately into the night sky. A sense of the modern Australian landscape becomes overwhelmingly tangible in the live show, which features her curiously engaging video work making for an affecting multi-sensory experience.
Debut Golden Syrup performances took place at Hobart’s incredible Dark Mofo Festival in 2016. Since then, 2017 has seen a rapid progression and evolution across a variety of events curated by Retallick herself, with more to come following the release of this carefully compiled material. The album was produced by Retallick, recorded with the assistance of engineer Nick Huggins (Little Lake) and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring).
